Mâwandônan Consulting

Project Objective:

To determine the extent that Indigenous peoples in Canada agree/disagree over Canada’s energy future in the age of climate change and ascertain areas where polarization may exist and what variables drive that polarization.

Methodology:

Clayton Desjarlais of Mâwandônan Consulting has been contracted by The Canadian Energy and Climate Nexus (CECN) to be the lead in a study that would have the 3 Aboriginal groups of Canada (Indian, Métis, and Inuit – Section 35(2) – of Constitution) respond to a survey.  CECN, with input from Clayton Desjarlais, has designed 6 questions to which the 3 Aboriginal groups will respond.  Within the 3 Aboriginal groups there have been 4 rights holders groups identified as the primary respondents to the survey.  Those rights holder groups are: Chief and Council, Regional Directors within Métis groups, Elders (with various functions), and community members.  Desjarlais will contact the relevant groups within the 10 provinces and 3 territories with a baseline of 2 minimum groups responding from each and will contact as many as required to attain responses from that minimum.  Desjarlais will compile those responses (in their raw form) and will add observations at the end of the study.

Expected Completion Date: December 2020.

Results will be posted on the company website and shared with the broader energy and climate ecosystem in Canada.

Clayton Desjarlais is an Aboriginal Consultant and owner of Mâwandônan Consulting.  Since 1996, Clayton’s consulting business has constructed and facilitated high quality professional development workshops in areas such as: leadership development, team building, collaborative conflict resolution, and has done extensive work around the duty to consult and negotiating a consultation agreement.  Clayton has undertaken many consulting projects including:  employment needs assessment for SaskFerco related to the issues and needs of increasing that corporation’s Aboriginal workforce; Facilities Review for Kikinahk Friendship Centre in LaRonge; construction and facilitation of focus groups for ISC to help identify interior conflict, lead consultant for Municipality of Bonnyville to identify and engage with Aboriginal rights holders impacted by the construction of a water line between Bonnyville and Cold Lake.
